New Owners at Bear Valley Mountain Resort

The Bear Valley Mountain Resort has been sold to the Dundee Reality USA, LLC on July 20, 2005.  The Bear Valley rumor mill has been forecasting this event, as well as the coming of the next Ice Age, for some time now.  Nice to see that at least one rumor is true.  (more information)

Considering that the last snow storm in Bear Valley was June 17th, and people are still skiing on Ebbetts Pass, maybe both rumors are going to materialize.  We will keep you posted on Bear Valley glacial developments.

MAS Environmental Update
[top ]

MAS is pleased to learn that the Forest Service has decided to elevate in priority the completion of a Winter Recreation Plan for the Calaveras Ranger District which includes the greater Bear Valley area. MAS has been active in raising awareness for the need of such a plan.

Over the last 10 years MAS has noticed a sizable increase in both motorized and non-motorized winter recreation along the Highway 4 corridor.  This increase, coupled with the fact that there is currently no Winter Recreation Plan, is straining the relationships among user groups.  It is our view that without a clear management strategy from the Forest Service, the enjoyment of all winter recreationalists is jeopardized and threatened.

Although a considerable amount of work was done 10 years ago to develop and implement a plan, the shift in Forest Service priorities prevented the completion of the project.

MAS would like to ask people to write the Forest District Supervisor, Tom Quinn, and encourage him and his staff to complete a Winter Recreation Plan for the Highway 4 corridor in a timely manner.  Tom Quinn can be reached directly through email, a standard USFS comment form (http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/stanislaus/contact/feedback.shtml), or regular mail at:
