MAS South Lake Tahoe Climbing

MAS has been busy this Spring guiding and teaching at Phantom Spires and Lovers Leap on the Highway 50 corridor near South Lake Tahoe.  Both of these areas offer spectacular single and multi-pitch climbing on excellent granite.

MAS has scheduled most of these courses on mid-week dates to avoid crowds.  Private guiding and instruction arrangements can be made 7 days a week.  Customize your private course to emphasize quality climbing mileage or technical instruction.  Most opt for a little of both.   Tip: It is cost effective to grab a climbing partner and schedule a private program.

Washington Post Article
by Jon Waterman

Around the MAS office and homeplace we have been concerned with the fate of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Jonathan Waterman has written a new book on the subject, Where Mountains Are Nameless; Passion and Politics in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Waterman has been exploring the Refuge for more than twenty years, and by blending passion with science and natural history, he creates an extraordinary portrait of a place imperiled by the oil companies.  Along with recommending the book, available at Amazon.com or Powells.com., we'd like to ask everyone to write their Congressional representative before the final vote in mid September. Tell them not to defile one of our last great national treasures with oil rigs!

Here is a link to help you contact a senator that represents you.  Plus here is the email address for George W. Bush.

MAS Guide Tip: EARNEST Anchors
[top ]
anchors
EARNEST?

As the summer rock climbing season gets rolling it is a good idea to refresh your anchoring.  Here is a quick and simple acronym to assess your anchors integrity.

E- pre or self equalize anchor points
A - angle at the master point less than 90º
R - at least two solid anchors points
NE - "no extension" of master point if one anchor fails
S - anchor points should be solid (most important)
T - strive to build anchor in a timely manner

Are your anchor systems EARNEST? If not, or you are not sure, think about taking an MAS anchoring program.  We have three to choose from:

  1. Top-Rope Anchor Workshop - Focuses on the basics of EARNEST anchor system construction and evaluation through the use of bolts, trees and boulders.  Learn the do's and don't of top-rope climbing.  And of course, we do some outdoor climbing at the end of the day. (1 day) $110.
  2. Traditional Gear Workshop - Expand your anchoring skills to include removable protection such as nuts, hexes, and cams.  Proper placement and evaluation of gear will be incorporated into the EARNEST principle to achieve "bombproof" anchor systems which we will use to climb.  This course is great preparation for traditional lead climbing. (1 day) $110
  3. Intermediate Rockcraft Seminar - This course combines the two workshops above into an intensive anchoring building experience.  Plus we will have more time for climbing and help with outdoor climbing techniques. (2 days) $205 / $275 w/meals & lodging at BaseCamp.
