The summer climbing season is well underway and MAS guides have been busy climbing, guiding and teaching all over Northern California. One of our favorite areas is Lovers Leap which hosts some of the best 5.7-5.10 multi-pitch rock climbing in the state.
While MAS has a number of scheduled courses at "The Leap" we now have 3 guides living near the area so we are able to teach and offer last minute trips with less notice than in previous years. So if you see an opening in your schedule and want to take advantage of climbing with a friendly professional guide please consider contacting MAS. We hope to see you out there!

BaseCamp is now serving dinner 7 nights a week until the end of October. Head chef Mickael Blancho and chef Rafi Youatt have certainly proven themselves as a culinary dynamic duo who share a common goal to provide tasty and healthy meals to BaseCamp patrons. We think you will notice the difference.
Check out the BaseCamp website for the new "Fusili Fling" recipe and new "Chefs Tip" to assist your kitchen prowess. |

| Does your rope feel gritty? Are your hands black with aluminum oxide after each belay? If so it's time to wash your rope. Yes, washing your climbing rope is both easy and helps lengthen the life of the precious cord. |
How to wash a climbing rope:
1) To avoid heinous tangles braid your rope into a daisy chain (aka - an electricians coil).
2) Best to use a front loading washing machine but if one is not available put your rope in a pillow case with a good knot on the top. This insures that rope will not get underneath the agitator and potentially damage your rope and machine.
3) Put your rope in the washing machine with cold water and a small amount of mild detergent such as Woolite (NO BLEACH). Use a gentle wash cycle.
4) After the wash cycle is done hang your rope in a low-humidity room without direct sunlight. Drying may take 2-3 days but the wait is well worth it. |
 |
General climbing rope TLC:
1). Inspect your rope regularly
- look for heavy signs of abrasion and/or sheath damage. Hard or mushy spots in the rope are bad. Consider cutting out bad sections or simple retiring the rope.
2). Use your rope correctly - refrain from pulling your car out of a ditch or doing tree work with your rock climbing rope.
3). Use proper rappelling techniques - forget the movie-style rappels. High-speed, smokin' rappels damage your ropes sheath.
4). Keep your rope clean - dirt particles increase the wear and tear on the core. Use a rope bag/tarp and avoid stepping on your rope. |
