MAS Guide Tip: "Light is Right" top

Summer is the perfect time to start shedding weight from your backpack. Try making your next backcountry adventure lighter and thus kinder on your body. You’ll find with a lighter backpack the ascent will be quicker, the descents less pounding, and overall you will have more energy to enjoy the scenes.

To start packing light keep in mind the essentials and stick to the basics: food, water, shelter, & warmth. Much of the enjoyment will come from the backcountry environment and the company you keep. Emphasize minimal extras so you don't get bogged down by a heavy backpack.

For Backpacking:
  • If the weather report is favorable consider a tarp instead of a tent
  • How about iodine & ascorbic acid tablets instead of a water filter?
  • One pot cooking is easy if your meals are based on boiling water
  • Rarely do you need more than one bowl & one spoon
  • Use your sleeping bag as a jacket/blanket in the evenings instead of packing a heavy jacket
  • Checkout the modern lightweight hiking shoes and boots

For Climbing:

  • You rarely need a rack of double cams for each climb
  • Leave the large cams with your partner when the next pitch is a finger crack
  • Learn to efficiently use hexes instead of cams to help save rack weight
  • Start adding carabiners such as the Black Diamond Light D & Neutrino into your rack
