avalanche courses About MAS Avalanche Education

MAS avalanche courses are professional "hands-on" courses which challenge participants with a blend of classroom and "on snow" exercises and tours. All MAS avalanche programs use the material and standards set by the American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) which is recognized internationally as the industry leader in avalanche education.

avalanche education

MAS guides AIARE certified as well as being seasoned and personable educators. All avalanche programs include the use of beacons, shovels and probes and course handouts.

MAS is fortunate to teach in one of California's best areas for avalanche courses, Bear Valley. At 7000 feet, with a deep snowpack literally right out our front door, course participants can maximize their time with little or no transition time between classroom and field work. A variety of slopes, aspects, steepness and sites insures that students receive a good perspective of the snow conditions in a relatively short period of time.  Learning from professionals in a spectacular setting is what MAS avalanche education is all about.

MAS offer 5 levels of avalanche education:

  1. Awareness Lecture  (2 hours) - offered at various locations in Northern California
  2. Level I Seminar  (3 days) - a two day course followed by an Avalanche Skills Tour
  3. Ski/Board Level I Seminar  (3 days) - a two day course at the ski resort followed by an Avalanche Skills Tour
  4. Avalanche Skills Tour  (1 day) - a full day backcountry adventure to assess avalanche conditions and practice safe traveling skills
  5. Level II Seminar (4 days) - designed for trip leaders and folks headed into remote locations where the basics of avalanche forecasting is needed.
