What
is Telemark Skiing? |
top |
 |
The telemark ski position was first
used by Sondre Auersen Norheim
in 1868 during a ski jumping contest. A contest in which he won. Sondre was
from the Norwegian county of Telemark for which the new style was
named.
Telemark
style is easily recognized as the skier separates their feet, one foot forward, one foot back with the heel raised. Telemark skiers use specialized nordic (cross country) gear which enables the heel of of the boot to rise off the ski. This is why telemark skiing is also called "freeheel" skiing. |
An experienced telemark skier is a beautiful
and exciting sight. A blend of body positions keep the telemark skier
in a constant motion of balance, grace and power. However these
skills are not easily learned and sometimes counter-intuitive to the
veteran alpine skier or snowboarder.
