About the Bear Valley Telemark Festival Race top

This year we are offering two race courses.  The first course, intermediate skiing skills required, has been our standard course the past several years.  The new course for advanced skiers only is actually a reincarnation of the demanding race we used at the 4th Annual Bear Valley Telemark Festival in the year 2000.  With two races courses we are guaranteed to challenge more telemark skiers and push people's limits.  In addition, more prizes will be given out to the top finishers for each course.

Festival Race Overview top

Intermediate Course
This race resembles the course we used two years ago. A short uphill climb starts the race before entering a giant slalom race course.  Individuals will race one at a time and be timed by stop watches and radios.  Typical race times range from 1 to 3 minutes.  All intermediate and above festival participants are welcome to enter.

The intermediate race starts at "coaches corner" which can be found near the top of the Super Cub chairlift.  Exit left from this chairlift and descend the first small hill and look to your right.  You can't miss the race course from hear. (see map)

Advanced Telemark Skiers Only Course
This race course is not for the light hearted!  Be prepared to climb, skate, or crawl up a moderate slope (Tucks Run) before dropping into the advanced runs of Porridge Bowl (skiers right) and Spring Gap (black diamond cat track) before sweeping into the smaller climb of the intermediate course and finishing with the giant slalom gates before rushing through the finishing line.  Average course times in the past were from 8-15 minutes.

The start of the advanced race will be held at the top of Nastar.  You can access this area from either the Koala or Kuma Chair.  The race will be a group start.  Sizes of each group will depend on number of participants.  Don't worry about your neighbors, the initial climb is sure to spread the field out. We will likely have a male and female division as well as an instructor heat. (see map)
